Centennial lecture spotlights the 50s

Continuing the recognition of the 100th birthday of Pinellas County, Heritage Village history lecture series presents the urbanization that transformed Pinellas County during the 1950s as developments replaced old groves and farmlands. “Home Rule” brought political power to the local level, while cold war industries fueled the vibrant economy. This free program begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11.

"Island Festival" vendors needed

St. Pete Beach -- "Island Festival" celebrates the culture of the South Pinellas Gulf Beaches Communities.

The event will be held at Gulf Beaches Historical Museum located at 115 10th Avenue on March 3. Artists, crafters, and antique/collectable vendors are invited to participate.

There will be space for 25 vendors in Pass-a-Grille park adjoining the museum. There is no fee, but a donation would be greatly appreciated in exchange for participation.

Treasure Island -- The Art Guild is starting art classes on Monday, Feb. 13.

Basic drawing will be from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and basic watercolor will be from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.

Cost for each is $30 for 6 weeks or $6 per class if paid weekly.

They will be held in The Treasure Island City Hall Auditorium located at 120 108th Avenue.

St. Petersburg, Florida - For nearly 40 years, the "inverted pyramid" at the St. Petersburg Pier has been synonymous with the city's skyline. Now one of three new designs budgeted at no more than $50 million stands to take its place.

"Each design is interesting," says Carol Sandison. Carol is visiting from Washington State with her friend Mona Rominger. They take a look at the three finalists.

Treasure Island, FL -- The Treasure Island Art Guild will accept paintings for its December show on Thursday, Dec. 1 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Treasure Island City Hall, located at 120 108th Avenue.

Members may enter up to 2 paintings.

If you are not a member, you are still invited to become one and enter the show.

A reception for the winners and potluck Christmas party will be on Saturday, Dec. 10 at noon at the same place.

They will be selling cards hand painted by the artists to help support their scholarship fund.

Treasure Island - Sanding Ovations is an international event, with 10 sculptors from four different countries.

Hang with the Masters at a "meet and greet" reception with Benjamin Probanza of Acapulco, Mexico (1st place last year), Jan Selen and Arianne van Rosmalen, from Amsterdam, Netherlands, Jonathan "Jobi" Bouchard and Stephane Robert, from Quebec, and others from our own Treasure Island, and other Florida cities.
